A Core Virtue for This Life

I sense that each of us arrives in this life with a core virtue — an inner quality around which many of our life experiences are woven. It is this virtue we activate, nourish, refine, and learn through living.
The central virtue of my own life is service. It has appeared in many flashes and across many different settings, yet its driving force has always remained the same: service. To recognize it, to live it, and to accept it can happen in many different ways.
When we discover this inner virtue and begin to consciously embody it through the events of our lives, our relationship to those events begins to change. Resistance gradually fades. The quality of our experiences becomes more refined through acceptance and through wholehearted participation — through giving ourselves without holding back.
I believe it is deeply important to become aware of this inner virtue, to live it fully, and to regard it as a gift. It is not something to overcome or replace, but something to cultivate through experience and raise into its fullest expression.
With love,
your traveling companion
